The Star And The Sceptre
A Star shall come out of Jacob;
A Sceptre shall rise out of Israel
Numbers 24:17
At Christmas, we celebrate the fulfilment of God's promises, vividly reflected in Balaam's prophecy of a "Star" and "Sceptre" (v 17) rising from Jacob. The imagery of the Star reminds us of the star that guided the Magi to the Christ Child (Matthew 2:1-2), symbolising divine guidance and the revelation of the Messiah to the nations.
The Sceptre speaks of authority and dominion, a foreshadowing of Christ’s eternal reign. Though His kingship began humbly in a manger, Jesus embodies the promised ruler who brings justice, peace, and salvation.
Christmas is a reminder that God’s plans are sure, even when they seem distant. As Balaam said, "I see Him, but not now," Christmas proclaims that the "not now" became "now" in Bethlehem. The One foretold by the Star has come to bring light to our darkness and establish His dominion in our hearts.
As we marvel at the lights of the season, let us see them as echoes of the Star that heralded the birth of the Lord Jesus. May His light shine brightly in our lives, guiding us to worship and serve the King who has come and will come again.
