The Image
Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,
and to God the things that are God’s.
Mark 12:17
In the verses before us from Mark 12, the Lord asks for a coin (v 15), and then asked the religious leaders a question, “Whose image and inscription is on this coin?” (v 16). Part of the reason the religious leaders tried to “catch [Jesus] in His words” (v 13) was to discredit Him and charge Him with blasphemy for claiming to be God (see Matthew 26:63-64). Jesus made an exclusive claim that He is the Messiah (Matthew 26:63-64) and the exclusive way to the Father (John 14:6). The book of Acts underlines this exclusive claim in Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” John makes it clear when he wrote, “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world” (1 John 4:14). The good news is that in Christ, we have our Saviour!
