With God's Help

. . . Now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old.

Joshua 14:10

As we grow older, we noticed more joint pain, especially when the cold weather comes. Some days, one might feel less like a conqueror and more like someone conquered by the challenges of becoming older.

This is what the great Bible hero Caleb found as he got older—the former spy sent by Moses to scout out Canaan, the Promised Land (Num. 13–14). After the other spies gave an unfavourable report, Caleb and Joshua were the only spies out of the twelve whom God favoured to enter Canaan. Now, in Joshua 14, the time for Caleb to receive his portion of land had come. But there were enemies still to drive out. Not content to retire and leave the battle to the younger generation, Caleb declared, “You heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said” (Josh 14:12) the Lord will be with me.” That is the kind of mindset that kept Caleb battle-ready. He focused on God’s power, not his own, nor on his advanced age. God would help him do whatever needed to be done.

Most of us do not think of taking on anything monumental when we reach a certain age. But we can still do great things for God, no matter how old we are. Like Caleb, let us seize the opportunities that come our way.

It is interesting to note, that nowhere in the Bible do we read of retirement from the Lord's service. None of us, whatever our age, should shy away from doing the Lord's work. With the Lord helping us, we can conquer!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the strength to get through each day. Help me to do Your will. In Jesus name. Amen.
