Extending Dignity

When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman,

He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours?

Has no one condemned you?”

John 8:10

When the religious leaders dragged a woman before the Lord Jesus with the harsh (and accurate) charge of adultery, Christ kept the attention off her until He sent her accusers away. Once they were gone, He could have rebuked her. Instead, He asked two simple questions: “Where are your accusers?” and “Has no one condemned you?” (John 8:10). The answer to the latter question, of course, was no. Thus, the Lord Jesus gave her the Gospel in one brief statement: “Then neither do I condemn you.” And then the invitation: “Go and sin no more" (v 11), meaning, go and leave your life of sin.

Never underestimate the power of genuine love for people—the kind of love that refuses to condemn, even as it extends dignity and forgiveness to everyone.

John 8:2–11.

Prayer

Gracious God, please forgive me for sometimes having a judgemental spirit, and help me to show others Your love and grace. For Christ's sake. Amen.
