An Appointment

ree

Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.

Hebrews 9:28

Today's Bible Reading: Hebrews 9:23-28.

The Bible says that “it is appointed that man will die once” (Hebrews 9:27). All of nature’s in the process of dying. Yet most people are living as if they think that they will never die. Most people are living for today with barely a thought of eternity.

The Bible and nature both teach that everything that has a beginning also has an ending. The day begins with a sunrise; but the sun sets, the shadows gather, and that calendar day’s crossed out, never to appear again. We will never be able to repeat today. It’s gone forever.

Nations and civilizations rise, flourish for a time and then decay. Eventually, each comes to an end. This, because of sin, is the decree of history and the way of life on this planet.

This is why the Gospel is so important, it’s the Good News from God. But the Gospel also drives people to a decision—the most important decision ever made—and that is whether or not each individual will receive Christ as Saviour or reject Him and remain in their sin.

The world’s days are numbered. Every cemetery testifies that the Bible is true. Life is only a vapour that appears for a moment and then vanishes, just as the grass that withers and the flowers fade. God has prepared a bright future and a plan for each person and His message is to repent of sin and turn to Him and live forever. Decide today.

Prayer:  My Father, and my God, I praise You this day, and thank You, that You have made Yourself know to me, and redeemed me by the work of Your Son on Calvary's cross. In His name I praise You this day. Amen.

Heavenly Joy

ree

I have set the Lord always before me.

Psalm 16:8

Today's Bible Reading: Psalm 16.

For those who keep Heaven in view experience joy, even in the midst of trouble. Happiness can be fleeting, but joy runs deep; it is one of the fruits of the Spirit. The ability to rejoice in any situation is a sign of spiritual maturity, realising that for the Christian, to be absent from the body, means to be present with the Lord. In Psalm 16:11 the Bible says: “In Your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Think of having complete fulfilment, knowing that our homecoming brings unspeakable joy to our wonderful Lord! Only when we stand in the joyful presence of the Lord Jesus Christ will this be realized. So why do we prefer lingering here? Because we are not only earthbound in body; we are earthbound in our thinking. Our imagination is limited to the things of this earth. But when we leave this place, we will never dwell on it again. Our eyes and hearts will be fixed on Christ. In Psalm 16:9, the Bible says: “Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope.

Prayer:  Heaven Father, I thank You that I can rest in the knowledge that one day I will be going to heaven. Keep me rejoicing in this truth and telling others the Good News of the Saviour, that has opened the gates of Heaven for all who believe to enter. Amen.

The Donkey That Spoke

ree

Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth.

Numbers 22:28

Today's Bible Reading: Numbers 22:21–31.

The book of Numbers records the mercenary exploits of Balaam and how God hijacked his plan to curse His people (see Numbers 22-24). Through another Balaam-devised strategy, however, the children of Israel were led astray. Three times in the New Testament, Balaam’s waywardness and the consequences thereof are used to warn and divert believers in Jesus from unrighteousness. 2 Peter 2:15 speaks of “the way of Balaam . . . who loved the wages of wickedness,” Jude 11 notes “Balaam’s error,” and Revelation 2:14, warns of “the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin.”

In today's reading. the Bible tells us of Balaam’s donkey. Balaam was a pagan prophet serving a king who intended to harm Israel. As Balaam was riding his donkey to assist the king, “the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth” and it spoke to Balaam (Numbers 22:28). The donkey’s speech was part of the way God opened “Balaam’s eyes” (v 31), warned him of imminent danger and kept him from harming His people.

If God can use a donkey for good purposes, it is not at all far-fetched to believe He can use you and me as well. Looking to Him and seeking His strength, we can accomplish more than we ever thought possible.

Prayer: I want to serve You, Abba Father! Use my hands, my feet, my mouth, whatever You like! Help me to live for You today. In Jesus name. Amen.
