Resisting Temptation

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is

common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you

to be tempted beyond what you are able . . ".

1 Corinthians 10:13

Today's Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13.

Satan delights in stealing the seed of God's truth by filling our minds with distractions and temptations. Yet it should encourage every believer to remember that those who follow Christ can expect spiritual opposition. God never leaves His children to face temptation alone. The difference between a Christian and a non-Christian is not that one is tempted and the other is not. Both experience good and evil thoughts. The difference is that Christ gives His people grace and strength to choose what is right rather than what is wrong.

Imagine a man walking to a Bible study or prayer meeting with his Bible under his arm. He was undoubtedly tempted to stay at home, go bowling, or pursue some other pastime. Yet, as those competing thoughts filled his mind, he chose the better path and continued to the house of God (Jeremiah 6:16) .

Another man walks through the night to a bar. It may well have crossed his mind that he should remain at home with his family. But he yielded to the wrong desire and followed his sinful appetite.

Every believer faces temptation. The question is not whether temptation comes, but whether, by God's grace, we choose obedience. God is faithful, and He always provides the strength and the way of escape for those who trust Him.

Prayer: Decisions will have to be made each day, Father. With Your strength and wisdom, help me to make the right ones. In Christ's name I ask. Amen.
