The Broken Hearted
The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, . . .
Psalm 34:18
When a dear friend, and brother in the Lord, had a heart attack and subsequently died, I grieved with his wife, also a friend and sister in the Lord. They had been married for many years, and he had been a Christian that was “all out for Jesus.” Nothing was too much for His Saviour, and now his wife faced the unwelcome prospect of returning to an empty house each time she came home.
In the midst of her grief, my friend rested on the One who “is close to the brokenhearted.” All grief is personal, and we all grieve in different ways. Psalm 34, reminds us that even in the midst of our worst sorrows, our sovereign and loving God can be trusted.
Our heavenly Father suffered a profound separation of His own. As His Son, the Lord Jesus, hung on the cross He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46). Yet He endured the pain and separation of crucifixion for our sins out of love for us!
God understands! And because “the Lord is close to the brokenhearted,” we find the comfort we need.
If you need support, encouragement or comfort, He is near right now. Call on Him, for He is near to those who have a broken heart.
