Negative Dreams

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

Proverbs 18:10

All of us can have bad or negative dreams from time to time. Perhaps we feel we are falling from a high place, fleeing from a hideous creature, or standing before an audience and forgetting our speech. Mine are (from time to time) that I feel I am falling from a high place; And that I am standing in a pulpit, and I forget my sermon. I think it happens to us subconsciously, when we are feeling afraid or under attack.

When these negatives drams happen to me, as soon as I wake, I thank the Lord Jesus that He is with me, and then in the quietness of the night, I sing a hymn of praise, and as I do so, I feel my heart filling up with joy which replaces my fear or disturbance.

In John 6:15-21, we read that the Lord's disciples were afraid when in the darkness of night they saw a strange figure walking on the stormy sea of Galilee. But the mysterious figure was not part of a bad dream; He was real. Matthew reports that they “cried out for fear” (14:26). Then the disciples heard a familiar voice: “It is I; do not be afraid” (John 6:20). It was the Lord Jesus. Then their fears were calmed, as well as the sea.

The Saviour speaks the same assurance to us today amid the many fears along our Christian journey. In Proverbs 18:10, Solomon said, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Fears will come, but we are assured by the Lord Jesus that He is always with us, and thus is always a light in the darkness.
