Contentment in all Circumstances

"Not that I speak in regard to need,

for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content"

Philippians 4:11

Today's Bible Reading: Philippians 4:10–19.

The sign read, "The Elephant Man." It advertised an "exhibit" in Victorian circuses and "freak" shows. Shockingly, however, this popular attraction was a human being: Joseph Merrick (1862–1890). He suffered from severe deformities and had escaped an abusive life in the workhouse, only to endure the shrieks of horrified crowds as he sought to make a living.

Then he found refuge and friendship with the surgeon Frederick Treves. Treves marvelled at Merrick's gentleness and the way he never complained about his abusers or his condition. The answer lay in Merrick's deep faith. He knew the Bible intimately—not just with his mind, but also in his heart and soul. He experienced the strengthening and transforming presence of Christ that the apostle Paul also knew.

Paul faced hunger, beatings, stoning, imprisonment, and a debilitating health condition. Yet he had "learned in whatever state I am, to be content." His secret was his union with Jesus. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," Paul declared (v 13). Neither Paul nor Merrick depended on circumstances. Their resilience, assurance, and character flowed from their living union with Christ through His Spirit and His Word.

Upsetting, painful, and difficult circumstances can overwhelm us, consuming our thoughts and emotions. Yet we too can draw strength from God, who either meets our needs or enables us to endure them, "according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus" (v 19).

Prayer: Father God, Eever-present in me by the Holy Spirit, thank You that Your life in me reassures, satisfies and strengthens me, despite the problems I face. In Christ's name I praise and bless You. Amen.
