No Fear of Death

God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death,

nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain,

for the former things have passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

Today's Bible Reading: Revelation 21:1–5.

On the last night of Isaac Watts’s life, 24 November 1748, the person caring for him recorded that the pastor, who had taught others how to live, was now teaching them how to die. Friends gathered around his bed and listened closely. Watts said, “If God has no more work for me to do, then by His grace I am ready. I trust that all my sins are forgiven through the blood of Christ. I am not afraid to die.” Shortly after speaking these words, the great hymn writer passed away.

Those who love and believe in Jesus can share this absence of fear about death. We can trust the vision that John described in Revelation, that we will live for ever with Jesus, in the new heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21:1). There God promises to dwell with His people: “They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God” (v 3). No longer will we cry any tears, nor will we experience any pain: “ ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (v 4).

Dying is the great unknown, but we can trust our loving God and the promises He makes in His Word. We, like Isaac Watts, can affirm in faith, “I have no fear of dying.”

Prayer: Living God, thank You for Your promises that You will welcome me into your kingdom. Give me peace and hope when I contemplate my own death. In Jesus name. Amen.
