The Work of God

ree

What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?

John 6:28

Today's Bible Reading: John 6:26-29.

At the beginning of John 6, we find the Lord preaching to a hungry multitude. As He finishes His message, He sees their physical need—and does what only God can do. With just five loaves and two fish, He feeds 5,000 (v10). After everyone is satisfied, the disciples gather twelve baskets of leftovers—one for each disciple, a powerful reminder of God’s abundant provision.

The next day (v22), the same crowd returns with a question (v28): “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus responds (v 29), “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” His answer goes straight to the heart of the Gospel and the essence of true faith.

They were eager to do something for God—but Jesus makes it clear: the one thing God requires is belief in the One He has sent. That One is Jesus Christ—the Messiah, the Saviour, the Son of God.

Jesus is the one in whom we must place our faith. We may know this, but many still trust in other things—their good works, moral character, or religious habits. Yet the Lord leaves no room for confusion: “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

Prayer: Father, help me truly believe. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
