Two Sons

By faith Abel offered up a more
excellent sacrifice than Cain
Hebrews 11:4
Today's Bible Reading: Genesis 4:1-15.
Cain and Abel were the first sons of Adam and Eve (Genesis 4:1–2). Cain was a tiller of the ground, and Abel a keeper of sheep. Both brought offerings to the Lord, yet Abel’s offering was accepted and Cain’s was not. Abel offered his sacrifice in faith, desiring to worship God in spirit and in truth. Cain’s offering, though religious in form, lacked faith and was therefore rejected.
When Cain realised this, “Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell” (v 5). His unchecked anger led him to rise up against his brother and murder him.
These events carry a deeper meaning. Cain represents faith without love; Abel represents charity—love for one’s neighbour. Faith and love are meant to work together, side by side. When faith is separated from love, it becomes harsh, destructive, and empty religion. “Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and killed him” pictures how faith without love ultimately extinguishes charity.
Though this account is ancient, it remains deeply relevant. Many are religious, even within the Church, yet lack saving faith—faith that truly knows Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
What about you? Do you have empty, dead religion, or living faith in the Lord Jesus, resting in His precious work on the cross?
Prayer: Mighty Lord God, forgive me for those times when I have been hard-hearted, cold and religious towards people less fortunate than myself. Help me to tell others about Your Son, and show them by my words and actions, His love for them. In the name of the Lord Jesus I ask. Amen.
