Not Entertainment, But Grace

"“The last will be first, and the first last.

For many are called, but few chosen.”

Today's Bible Reading: Matthew 20:1-16.

The parable of the workers in the vineyard, teaches us important lessons about God's grace and the nature of His kingdom. In this parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a landowner who hires workers at different times throughout the day. 

The landowner represents God, and the workers symbolize people who respond to God's call at various stages of their lives. Some workers are hired early in the morning, while others are recruited later in the day. When evening comes and it is time to pay the workers, they all receive the same wage, regardless of the hours they worked. Those who worked longer grumbled, feeling that they deserved more (v 11).

This parable challenges our human understanding of fairness and rewards. It illustrates God's abundant grace and generosity. The landowner's response to the workers' complaints reveals the heart of God, who says, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you" (Matthew 20:13-14)

The parable teaches us that God's grace is not limited by our human sense of fairness or merit. God's grace is freely given to all who respond to His call, regardless of when they answer it. It is not based on our works, but on His mercy and love.

The parable also warns against having an attitude of entitlement or comparing ourselves to others. We should not grumble when we see others receiving blessings or rewards that we think we deserve more. Instead, we should focus on being grateful for the grace we have received and trust in God's wisdom and goodness.

The parable teaches us that even those who are converted late in life earn equal rewards along with those converted early, and also that people who convert early in life need not feel jealous of those later converts.

Let us rejoice in the blessings that God bestows upon all who respond to His call.
