Hospitality
Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
1 Peter 1:9
One way the Christian can serve the Lord Jesus is by opening one's home and heart, and be given to hospitality, in contrast to the prominent religious leader at whose home the Lord ate one Sabbath. Jesus told this teacher of the law that he should welcome “the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind” to his home—and not those who could repay him (Luke 14:13). The Lord's remarks suggest that the Pharisee hosted Jesus only out of pride (v. 12). The Lord saw that His host chose his guests from a sense of exclusion and pride, lacking love for others. Jesus told him to not only ask those who could repay something to the host.
Serving others with humility is one way we can be “representatives of the kingdom of heaven.” Whether or not we can provide a bed for strangers, we can put the needs of others before our own in different and creative ways. How will you extend God’s kingdom in our part of the world today?
