Today's Bible Reading: Genesis 27:1-10.

Our mini-series on Jacob continues with one of the most dramatic moments in Genesis — the day Rebekah and Jacob deceived Isaac to steal the blessing meant for Esau.

Isaac, believing his death was near, wanted to give his final blessing — his “last will and testament.” His failing eyesight showed his age (v 1), yet, as Martin Luther calculated, he was about 137 years old and would live another 43 years (Genesis 35:28).

In those days, a father’s blessing carried great weight, especially for the eldest son. Isaac planned to bless Esau, even though God had already declared that “the older will serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23), and Esau had sold his birthright to Jacob (Genesis 25:33).

Still, Isaac resisted God’s plan — and Rebekah, instead of waiting on the Lord, took matters into her own hands. Through deceit, she and Jacob tried to “help” God fulfil His promise.

Genesis 27:1–10 reminds us that when we manipulate situations to get what we want, it often leads to heartache. God’s timing may not make sense, but His plan is always worth the wait.
