A Warning
It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement.
Hebrews 9:7
I praise God for the modern world in which we live. Just think of the conveniences and gadgets that we have to make our lives easier. Imagine what life would be like if you had none of the wonderful things that accompany our modern world. This world is a wonderful place, and this is a wonderful time to be alive, but along with the blessings that we have and the things that we enjoy here, there are some things in our modern world that are anything but good. One of the worst things that has come about in the modern world is scepticism concerning the things of God, especially those things written in the Bible. Many in our day have no confidence in the truth of the Word of God. Be that as it may, the Bible is still God’s word, it is still divinely inspired, and it is still believable in every aspect.
Perhaps no other teaching has received more doubt than the one we read about in Luke 16, the doctrine of Hell. If someone still believes in Hell, they are often called old-fashioned, out of touch, out of step with reality, foolish and ignorant. Personally,I am not concerned with what people think or believe about Hell. I am concerned only about "What does God believe about Hell?"
Hell is a real place (v 23 and 28)
Hell will be filled with real people ( v 22)
Hell contains real punishments (v 23 - 25)
Hell Guarantees real permanence (v 26)
Hell can be avoided through a real promise (v 27-31)
Notice, in verse 29, the rich man is told that the Word of God holds the answer. The Bible tells us of God’s love for sinners – John 3:16. Of Christ’s death to save them – Isa. 53:1-12; Rom. 5:6-8. Of Christ’s resurrection that guarantees eternal life to all who come to Him by faith – Matt. 28:6; John 11:25-26.
