The Eternal Word

ree

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

John 1:1

Today's Bible Reading:  John 1:1-8.

John 1:1-8 is a powerful passage that describes the pre-existence and divinity of Jesus Christ. The opening verse, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God," lays the foundation for the rest of the passage.

The "Word" refers to Jesus Christ, who is the embodiment of God's divine wisdom and power. This verse tells us that Jesus existed before the world began and that He was with God the Father from the very beginning. The fact that the Word was God underlines the divinity of Jesus and His equality with God the Father.

Verse 2 further emphasizes the pre-existence of Jesus and His eternal nature. This verse tells us that Jesus was with God in the beginning, and that He played a central role in the creation of the world. The fact that all things were made through Him underlines the power and authority of Jesus Christ.

In verse 4, we learn that Jesus is not only the creator of the world but also the source of life. “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” This tells us that the light of Christ illuminates the darkness of the world, bringing hope and salvation to those who believe in Him.

Verse 8, introduce John the Baptist, who came to bear witness to the light of Christ. John's role was to prepare the way for Jesus, to help people understand who He was, and to point them towards the salvation that only He could offer.

As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded of the power and majesty of Jesus Christ. He is not just a wise teacher or a great prophet, rather, He is the very embodiment of God's wisdom and power. He created the world, sustains it, and offers salvation to all who believe in Him. May we seek to know Him more deeply and to bear witness to His light in our lives.

Prayer:    Dear God, thank You for Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the world. Help me to know Him more deeply and to bear witness to His light in my life. Guide me as I follow Him and bring glory to Your name. In the Messiah's name I pray. Amen.
