Generous By Name

The generous soul will be made rich,

And he who waters will also be watered himself.

Proverbs 11:25

Today's Bible Reading: 1 Peter 4:7–11.

Generosity and hospitality are not optional virtues for the Christian—they are marks of a life shaped by Christ Himself. Proverbs 11:25 tells us, “The generous soul will be made rich.” Generosity is not merely an action; it flows from a transformed heart. When we give, serve, and welcome others, we mirror the gracious character of our Lord.

Peter encourages believers, especially in challenging times, to love fervently and to be “hospitable to one another without grumbling” (1 Peter 4:9). Hospitality is an open door to the Gospel. People are far more willing to listen to our message when they see Christ-like love in our lives. A closed home or a closed heart often leads to a closed ear. If we show no kindness, no time, and no willingness to help, why would anyone believe the Gospel has power to change lives?

Across cultures, generosity speaks loudly. It crosses barriers, softens hearts, and demonstrates that the Christian life is more than words—it is a living witness. Scripture reminds us that when giving hospitality “some have unwittingly entertained angels” (Hebrews 13:2). When we welcome others, we honour God, serve His people, and may even touch eternity in ways we cannot yet see.

Let us therefore be “generous by nature,” not from duty but from devotion. As we give, God waters our own souls, and through our hospitality, others may be drawn to the Saviour we proclaim.

Prayer: Oh Lord my God, make my heart generous and my home hospitable, that my life may faithfully reflect Your love to all I meet. For Christ's sake. Amen.
