The Evangelist
Faith comes by hearing.
Romans 10:17
Today's Bible Reading: Romans 10:14-17.
An evangelist, biblically, is someone who has been called to share the Good News of Jesus Christ whenever and wherever they can. Are you ready for the uncomfortable part? If you are a believer, then You, my friend, are also called to be an evangelist.
While you may not preach in front of a congregation of people, you should still be able to put into action the words of 1 Peter 3:15. There, the Bible says, But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. . .
There is a quote, which is often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi—that reads, “Preach the Gospel always, and when necessary use words.” I appreciate what St. Francis was saying (if, in fact, he said it). He desired that people not only preach, but live what they are preaching. We can certainly say that was true of Francis of Assisi, according to history.
All Christian believers are supposed to live in a way that the light and love of Christ shines through us. But our calling to fulfil the Great Commission does not end there.
Unfortunately, I think many of us hide behind that mentality of “lifestyle evangelism.” We timidly think that if we live a good enough life, people will see our faith and will, in turn, make a decision for Christ. However, you can never live your life good enough to get somebody into Heaven.
In Romans 10:17, the Bible says, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. " Notice that the verse does not say faith comes through a friend being an exceptionally nice person. It does not say faith comes from a positive transaction with a local businessman. It says “faith comes by hearing”!
What would you say right now if a friend called you and asked why you believe in Jesus?
Prayer
Lord God. Help me to live the Christian life, and to always be ready to share Jesus where I have opportunity. In Christ's name, I pray. Amen.
