The Narrow Gate
Enter by the narrow gate.
Matthew 7:13
In Matthew 7:13, The Lord Jesus presents us with a profound metaphor—an invitation to consider our path in life. He urges us to enter through "the narrow gate," highlighting the stark contrast between this narrow gate and the wide gate that leads to destruction.
Imagine standing at a crossroads, facing two gateways. The wide gate appears alluring, surrounded by bright lights and promising pleasures, offering a path of least resistance. It is spacious and accommodating, welcoming everyone who desires an easy journey. This wide gate symbolizes the popular and broad path followed by many.
On the other hand, there stands the narrow gate. It seems unassuming, often overlooked in the midst of the world's distractions. The narrow gate represents a different choice, a road less travelled. It signifies the path of righteousness, holiness, and surrender to God's will. It demands intentionality and a willingness to forsake the comforts of conformity.
Why does the Lord encourage us to enter through the narrow gate (v 14)? Because it leads to life. The broad way, while initially enticing, eventually leads to destruction. It promises temporary pleasures but fails to fulfil the deepest longings of our hearts. It may seem appealing in the moment, but its end is despair, emptiness, and separation from God.
In contrast, the narrow gate is an invitation to walk with Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). It is an invitation to a transformed life, filled with purpose, peace, and eternal significance. By choosing the narrow gate, we embrace a journey that requires discipline, sacrifice, and faith in God's leading. It is a path where our hearts align with His, our desires align with His will, and our lives bear fruit that glorifies Him.
