The Truth About Blood

For the life of the flesh is in the blood . . .

Leviticus 17:11

Today's Bible Reading: Leviticus 17:10-12.

In this one verse, God reveals the deep significance of blood in making atonement for sin. In the Old Testament sacrificial system, the life of an animal was understood to be in its blood. Because of this, the shedding of blood was necessary to make amends for sins committed against God.

This sacrificial reality foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ many generations later. His “shed blood” is not only about the physical act of bleeding—Christian theology teaches that it represents the giving of His entire life on our behalf. The blood symbolizes His whole self-offering: His suffering, death, obedience, and love poured out for the salvation of humanity. Through this complete sacrifice, Christ made atonement once and for all.

As Christians, we can take comfort in knowing that the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus, has provided both forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Through faith in Him, we can be fully assured of our salvation, knowing that His life given for us has made us clean, holy, and accepted in the eyes of God.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the atonement made possible through His whole life given for us—symbolized in His shed blood. May I never take for granted the gift of forgiveness and eternal life. Help me to live each day in gratitude and obedience. In His name, Amen.
