Good Citizens

ree

Blessed are the undefiled in the way,

who walk in the law of the Lord!

 Psalm 119:1

Today's Bible Reading: Philippians 2:12-18.

In the days of the Lord Jesus, people did not live in a democracy; the people of His day could not vote, and they had no choice about who would rule them. Decades before the Lord's birth, the Romans had invaded that part of the world, and they maintained their power by brute force.

But the Lord did teach us to be good citizens, and to work for a better world. The people of His day could not do much to change their world, but He said they should do whatever they could—and so should we. “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” Jesus told His listeners when they asked Him if they should pay their taxes (Mark 12:17). The Bible also tells us to pray for those who are involved in government, “that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2).

The early Christians were often accused of undermining the state because they claimed a higher Lord other than Caesar. Yet they would point out that they supported the state by being good citizens and by praying for those in authority.

Remember, the world may not read the Bible, but they do read how you live your life. Is your life a witness for Christ ?

Prayer: Almighty God, I remember before Your throne of grace this day, all those in government, especially Christians, that they would seek Your guidance on all matters of state. In Jesus name. Amen.
