Courage And Devotion

I Am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen.

And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

 Revelation 1:18

Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Jewish council and a secret follower of the Lord Jesus, courageously asked Pilate for the body of Jesus (v 52). He took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped Him in linen, and laid Him in a tomb that had never been used (v 53). The women who followed Jesus observed where He was buried, preparing to return after the Sabbath with spices to anoint His body (v 55).

This passage highlights several key themes:

First: Courage and devotion: Joseph’s boldness in publicly identifying with Jesus at a critical moment demonstrates his deep faith. The women, too, show steadfast loyalty in preparing to honour Jesus despite the heartbreak of His death.

Second: Preparation for the resurrection: The burial of Jesus in a new tomb, and the Sabbath rest that follows, sets the stage for the resurrection. The careful details emphasise that Jesus truly died, but they also suggest the extraordinary event that will soon unfold.

Third: Observance of the Commandments: Even in the midst of grief, the women and disciples remain faithful to the Sabbath, reflecting their deep commitment to God’s commandments. The day of rest marks the pause before the triumph of Easter morning.

These verses highlight the humanity of those who loved Jesus and the sacred mystery of His death and resurrection. Their courage and devotion, should be ours, too.
