Praised In High Places

The Lord is high above the nations

Psalm 113:4

Today's Bible Reading: Psalm 113:1-5.

In Psalm 113:4, the Bible says, “His glory is above the heavens.” God is not only greater than all nations—His glory surpasses even the heavens. The covenant God of little Israel is greater than all creation. This truth moves the Psalmist to ask, “Who is like the LORD our God?” His supremacy over all things, in heaven and on earth, reveals His utter incomparability. Nothing in existence is greater than the One who dwells on high.

Our Lord reigns far above the nations. The Psalmist highlights God's unmatched authority and power. Not even the might of the Assyrians or Babylonians—the dominant empires of that age—can compare. From His exalted throne, the Lord sees all and rules over all.

Today, we may not face ancient empires, but we do face powerful forces and overwhelming circumstances. Some bring worry; others stir fear that borders on panic. Yet in every trial, we are not alone. It strengthens us to remember that God reigns above all, and nothing in creation can match His power.

Prayer:  O Lord who is high about the heavens, do not let me forget Your power or lose the courage that such power inspires within me. Amen.

Non Stop Praise

(Miniseries on praise – Day 5)

From the rising of the sun to its setting

the name of the Lord is to be praised.”

Psalm 113:3

Today's Bible Reading: Revelation 4:8-11.

In verse 1 of Psalm 113, we were encouraged to praise the name of Yahweh. In verse 2, we are encouraged to do it for evermore. The unchanging God never becomes unworthy of our praise. For the child of God with open eyes, time only reveals more reasons to praise Him.

Then we are told in verse 3, “From the rising of the sun to its going down” The sun shines constantly and its light illuminates every centimetre of the earth. The Psalmist is calling for God’s name to be praised everywhere and at all time. Imagine the sound such praise would make. Of course the animals, trees, mountains and seas would join in the praise. The picture is an image of heaven on earth.

From the rising of the sun to its going down: Using the Hebrew pattern of repetition, the psalmist emphasized the idea that our wonderful God is worthy of continual praise.

It is no wonder, that the throne of God is surrounded by that endless song of praise, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” (Rev 4:8).

Prayer:  Almighty God, accept my praise as I join with my brothers and sisters around the world and all creation in praising Your name. Through Your dear Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Praise Worthy Name

(Miniseries on praise – Day 4)

Blessed be the name of the Lord..

Psalm 113:2

Today's Bible Reading: Psalm 113:2-5.

The word “blessed” is used in a surprising way here. In the Beatitudes, found in the gospel of Matthew, “blessed” can also be translated as “happy.” Jesus seems to have chosen this word, at least in part, for its shock value. The idea of being “happy” while grieving or persecuted has sparked deep and lasting conversations.

Another use of “bless” is to speak of God’s generous care in our lives. We are blessed with daily provision, with faith and hope in difficult times. In this sense, blessings are the gifts that make life rich and full.

But can we bless God? Can we add to God’s joy? Maybe we can. While praise often comes through our words—spoken or sung—blessing God may be better expressed through our actions. When we live in a way that delights God, we bless Him. Our lives, lived in love and faithfulness, become a kind of offering.

So when the Psalmist calls us to bless the Lord, it’s an invitation to worship with both voice and life. Today, we are free to bless the Lord—wherever we are, whatever our situation. As the Psalmist says, "From this time forth and forevermore!" (v 2).

Prayer:  Holy Lord God, you are worthy of my worship and praise. Receive my shouts and songs of praise, and may they be re-enforced by life that I pray will be a blessing to You. In the name of Your Son. Amen.
