The Afterglow of Calvary

Your lovingkindness is better than life,

my lips shall praise You.

Psalm 63:3

Today's Bible Reading: Psalm 63:1-5.

To Christians, the joy of Christmas is not limited to the birth of the Lord Jesus. It is built even more on the triumph of His death and resurrection—that gave meaning to His birth. The mysterious spirit of generosity which possesses us at Christmas is the afterglow of Calvary. The fact of the cross illuminates Christmas and hallows it. In the gifts we exchanged, we should remember that they are symbolic of the unspeakable Gift of God’s love, so very clearly demonstrated in the Gift of His Son (2 Corinthians 9:15).

Personally, I do not believe that Christians should be giving expensive gifts to each other at Christmas. We should quietly give simple little gifts that are expressions of our love and devotion to the recipients. These gifts become symbolic of the gift of God’s love. How much money could be saved and invested in the Kingdom of God by thousands of Christian families and individuals every year if the true meaning of Christmas was observed.

Prayer:  Loving God, my heavenly Father, in Your gift of Jesus I see Your immeasurable love reaching out to all mankind. How I praise You and adore You! In His precious name. Amen.

The Gift Giver

He who did not spare His own Son,

but delivered Him up for us all,

how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Romans 8:32

Today's Bible Reading: Romans 8:31-39.

God is the ultimate Giver of gifts. The value of a gift often reflects the generosity and ability of the giver. Though we don’t always think of people as gifts, the relationships we share are among life’s most precious blessings. The Bible teaches us that God gave us the greatest gift of all—a Person—and that Person is Jesus Christ.

One Christmas, a six-year-old boy answered a knock at the door. When he opened it, there stood his father, just returned home after a month-long work trip. The boy didn’t ask, “Daddy, what did you bring me?” Instead, he threw his arms around his father’s neck and said, “Oh, Daddy, this is the best Christmas present I have ever had!”

As this Christmas season comes to a close, have you done the same? Have you opened the door to your heart and welcomed in the best Christmas present ever?

Prayer:  My Lord and my God, Your costly Gift of Your Son, Jesus, fills all the longings and desires of my heart. Thank You for this incredible gift. Help me to receive Him fully today. Amen.

The Miracle of Christmas

God sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,

on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh.

Romans 8:3

Today's Bible Reading:  Romans 8:1–10.

At a car boot sale, I found a nativity set in a battered old cardboard box. In the box, there was only a few sheep and the Christ Child. As I picked up the baby Jesus, I noticed the finely sculpted details of the infant’s body. This newborn was not cocooned in a blanket with closed eyes—he was awake and partially unwrapped with outstretched arms, open hands and fingers extended. “I am here!” He seemed to say.

The figurine illustrated the miracle of Christmas, that God sent His Son to earth in a human body. As Jesus’ infant body matured, His little hands played with toys, eventually held the Torah and then fashioned furniture before His ministry began. His feet, once plump and perfect at birth, grew to carry Him from place to place to teach and heal. At the end of His life, these human hands and feet would be pierced with nails to hold His body on the cross.

In Romans 8:3, the Bible says, “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh.” If we accept the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus as payment for all our wrongs, all our sins and submit our lives to Him, we will find relief from sin’s bondage. Because the Son of God was born to us as a real, wiggling, kicking infant, there’s a way to have peace with God and the assurance of an eternity with Him.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to earth as a human baby to free me from the bondage of sin and death. Amen.
